The popularity of in-line skating has grown tremendously over the past few years, and with our amazing climate and outdoor tendencies, you would consider Arizona as a mecca for the sport. Not even close. Arizona doesn't crack the top 10 list. What state tops the list? You guessed it. California. Let's get skating, people!

Anti-owie Stuff

Gear The majority of in-line skating injuries can be prevented by simply wearing the proper protective gear. Wearing a helmet and wrist guards are imperative; knee and elbow pads are not a bad idea. Beginners have a tendency to fall backwards, and without a helmet, head and wrist injuries are often the end result.
Hazards: avoid water, oil, and sand-not to mention traffic. Concentrate on your skating and not the day ahead. Obey all traffic laws; they apply to skaters, too. Skate on the right and pass on the left. Broadcast your intentions to others verbally,"Passing on your left." Yield to pedestrians.

The Greenbelt & Tempe Town Lake

Tempe Town Lake The bike path linking the greenbelt in Scottsdale to Tempe Town Lake makes it possible to skate without having to deal with rough, old tarmac. This path runs on the north bank of Tempe Town Lake, just east of Rural Road, and continues northeast to join the greenbelt at Curry Road. You can skate north past Shea Blvd., about 10 miles, only having to cross a busy street 4 times, all with traffic lights. Tempe Town Lake, also known as the "Million Dollar Bike Path," is wide and silky smooth on both sides of the lake and are great for biking or running, too.
