Overview: In the late 1800s, Thomas Gates, looking for an easier way to his silver mine west of Tucson, happily discovered this scenic pass.
Trailhead (TH): Take I-10 to Tucson, go west (right) on Speedway to Gates Pass Rd. The trailhead parking lot is 7.2 miles from I-10. 
Trail: Gates Pass Trail.
Length: 5 miles.
Rating: Moderate - difficult.
Highlights: Great vistas and giant saguaros.
Camping: Gilbert Ray Campground (fee).
Season: Year-round, best Nov. through May.
