Tonto National Forest Campgrounds
The Tonto National Forest is the fifth largest forest in the United States. It encompasses nearly three million acres and is one of the most-visited forests in the U.S. Its boundaries are Phoenix to the south, the Mogollon Rim to the north and the San Carlos and Fort Apache Indian reservations to the east.

MAP #1 Pinal & Upper
Pinal Campgrounds: 28 camp units, tables, grills, no drinking
water available, vault toilets, high clearance vehicles are
recommended, no trash service: PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT!
Directions: This site is 10 miles southwest of Globe. Follow
paved Jess Hayes Road southeast of Globe to the junction of
Icehouse Canyon Road/Forest Road (FR) 112 and Sixshooter Canyon
Road/Forest Road (FR) 222. Continue on paved FR 112 for 2 miles, to
the junction of FR 55 and FR 112. Take the right fork and continue
on the partially-paved FR 55 for 2 miles. At the junction of FR 55
and FR 651, turn left. Proceed 10 miles on unpaved FR 651 to the
site.
Globe Ranger District: 928-402-6200
MAP #2 Cholla: 206 camp units
(tent-only, single, and double) with shade ramadas, fire rings with
grills, picnic tables, and water hydrants. Toilets and showers are
located throughout the camp loops. There are also playgrounds.
Nearby are a paved boat launch ramp and fish-cleaning station.
More Sites: Schoolhouse Point, Bermuda Flats and Windy Hill
all at Roosevelt Lake, there are
hundreds of sites and amenities.
Directions: From Mesa, take State Hwy. 87/Beeline Highway
north for about 60 miles to its junction with State Hwy. 188. Turn
right and follow State Hwy. 188 south for 28 miles to the site.

MAP #3 Horseshoe: 9 camp
units, grills, picnic tables and vault toilets, trash service, no
drinking water available, not recommended for trailers over 16
feet.
Directions: From Carefree, take Cave Creek Road for 7 miles
to Forest Road (FR) 205. Turn right on FR 205 and travel for 6
miles to the junction of FR 205 and FR 19. At this junction, FR 205
turns left and becomes a maintained unpaved road. Follow FR 205 for
10 miles towards Horseshoe Reservoir. At the junction of FR 205 and
FR 205A, turn right and travel to the site.

MAP #4 Seven Springs &
CCC: 23 camp units, grills, picnic tables, vault toilets, trash
service, drinking water available during daylight hours
(solar-powered well pump).

Directions: From Carefree, take Cave Creek Road/Forest Road
24 for 20 miles north to Seven Springs.

MAP #5 Houston Mesa: 75
units, shower facilities coin operated, flush toilets, Drinking
water, dump station , picnic table, campfire rings and grill,
firewood: $5.00.
Directions: This site is located north of Payson at the
junction of State Hwy. 87 and the Houston Mesa Road/Forest Road
(FR) 199. Turn east on FR 199 for 1/10 mile to the Houston Mesa
Campground located on the north side of the road. Houston Mesa
Horse Campground is located on the south side of the road.

MAP #6 Christopher Creek: 43

Directions: 21 miles northeast of Payson on State Highway
260; east of Mile Marker #271; turn south into the site.

MAP #7 Sharp Creek: 28 camp
units, vault toilets, drinking water, picnic tables, cooking grill,
campfire rings, lantern holders, firewood for sale: $5.00.
Directions: Located 23 miles northeast of Payson on the
south side of Highway 260, approximately 1 mile east of Christopher
Creek.

MAP #8 Upper Tonto Creek: 9

Directions: This site is 17 miles northeast of Payson. From
Payson, travel 16 miles east on State Hwy. 260. Just east of Mile
Marker # 269 at Kohl's Ranch, turn left (north) on Forest Road (FR)
289. Travel one mile and turn right into the site.
